'Different Times' is a revised and extended version of the book 'On Looking Back. The narration is drawn from memories of years spent growing up in the grimy and smoke-filled streets of Manchester during the author's childhood in the 1930's. He also delves 30 years further back to tap into the reminiscences of his mother, who grew up in the same area around the turn of the century. The author's line drawings illustrate childrens games and nursery rhymes. An absorbing and historically priceless record of a far off Manchester, vivid descriptions. I was especially taken with the portrayal of the murky River Irk and the fiery steam engine crossing Rochdale Road.
