This striking modern style building is now the headquarters of Irish Nationwide and was originally the headquarters of the Carrolls Tobacco Group. It was designed by architects Robinson Keefe Devane.
This is the view from the Luas stop Charlemont, which is located on a new bridge over the Grand Canal. At first sight the Irish Nationwide building looks as if it could be new, but it was constructed between 1962 and 1964. It is a groundbreaking piece of modern architecture in Ireland, and I'm ashamed to say I had never seen it or heard of it before. The combination of the building and the new tram line makes an interesting statement about the development of Dublin and Ireland.
