I offer tutoring and training in English as a Foreign Language in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. I have a degree in Modern Languages and 14 years experience as a teacher of EFL and other languages.

What I offer and who can benefit

I am based in Stockport and south Manchester and I offer private tuition and in-company training in English as a Foreign Language.

I can help adults who are following an English language language course either at home, online or at a college. I can also provide an in-house English language training course for small groups.

Additional options - MP3, written summary, e-mail support

I am a '21st century' teacher of languages, making use of modern technology. I use an Apple MacBook Pro computer, e-mail, electronic documents and online media. But I also use good, old fashioned traditional methods requiring no more than a pen and paper. There is no substitute for intense study activity and active use of mental abilities, but modern technology provides some additional option.

MP3 recording of lessons

I can record some or all of lessons for later revision. The recording is provided as an MP3 file for transfer to the student's computer or MP3 player.

Recording your spoken performance on an audio file, along with my corrections and feedback, means you have a permanent copy of your personalised learning that can be used for reinforcement and revision later. Playing the recording after a few months will reveal the progress you have made. You can also pause the recording to write down vocabulary and phrases. I use a Roland Edirol professional quality stereo MP3 recorder so the sound quality is crisp and clear.

Written summary of each lesson

I can provide a written summary of the lesson as a Word Document or MP3 file. I can do this as I am a skilled writer and journalist with a typing speed of around 80 words per minute! I will e-mail you the written report about half way between lessons so you can refresh your memory after a few days with the material covered, and get a reminder of the areas you need to cover for the next lesson. You can file the summaries on your computer as a record of every lesson.

E-mail, phone and text support between lessons.

Often when you're studying between lessons you may come across points you are not sure about, vocabulary, grammar, or some other point you need to ask about. There's nothing worse than having an urgent question or problem, but no one available to solve it.

If you take advantage of my support between lessons option, I am always there to assist you, your personal, 7-days-a-week tutor and trainer! I can usually get back to you right away or within a few hours. Please note I offer primarily face-to-face tuition, supplemented by e-mail, telephone or text support between lessons if you require it.

My credentials and why I am well suited to teaching English

Unlike many EFL teachers, I have learned two languages myself - I have a BA Honours and MA degree in Modern Languages (German and French) from Trinity College Dublin. The course included linguistics and phonetics. I believe it is essential to have reached a high standard in foreign language in order to be able to teach your mother tongue.

I have taught English as a Foreign Language in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Germany and the UK. In Saudi Arabia I taught at the Institute of Banking in Riyadh, and as well as providing classroom tuition, I was examinations officer. In the UAE I was an English language instructor with the Military. As well as teaching in the classroom, was in charge of the Computer Assisted Language Learning labs.

Professional experience in online media

Since 1996 I have been a photographer and website publisher, using written English to produce articles and other material. My photos and articles are a major source of information from Manchester. I have co-authored a book about Manchester, and been interviewed many times on tv and radio.

Whilst teaching in the Middle East, I produced audio-visual English language learning materials.

If you'd like to learn English in Manchester or Stockport there are many options to look at, but why not consider a friendly, independent tutor with lots of ideas, local knowledge and experience in website publishing, journalism and writing?

All languages are fascinating to me in some way and my mother tongue is no exception. I have a greater desire than ever to pass on my linguistic knowledge and help people to achieve their full potential.

I love languages and I love helping people. Maybe I can help you!
