I offer photography tutoring and photography training in Manchester, north Cheshire and Liverpool. I can also offer photography lessons in other parts of the UK. I've been using photography on a professional basis since 1996, when I took a break from a career in teaching. Read on to find out who can benefit and what I have to offer.

Benefits of having your own photography tutor

There are various ways to learn photography: You can join a class, buy a book or DVD course, or sign up for an online course. Learning this way can be highly effective but there is one thing missing: Dedicated time with an expert trainer who can focus on you and the areas you need to improve. A tutor gives you a sense of confidence, and can quickly sort out that thorny problem you just can't find an solution to.

Topic areas I cover

As a tutor, I don't teach a course. I simply provide backup and support in any area you need. You might be studying on a course, or you may just wish to spend some time focusing on the areas you are not so confident about. I will tailor the tuition to the areas you want to cover, I may refer you to relevant information and can even produce some training materials exclusively for you.

Please note, I only offer help in general, basic principles of photography, and in my own areas of activity, i.e. cityscapes, street scenes, architecture, portraiture, outdoor fashion photography, general photography for non-commercial purposes

I don't offer tuition in areas such as: fashion and glamour photography in the studio, wedding photography, product photography, food photography. These areas would be better dealt with by a photographer-trainer with the relevant professional experience

Optional extras

Using my professional quality MP3 recorder, I can record some or all of the session. I will transfer it to your computer so you can play it again for reinforcement and revision. There is a small extra charge for this service.

I can produce a written summary and report in PDF format, and e-mail it to you after the session or before the next one. This document will provide a valuable record of what was covered and will contain some recommendations and an action plan. This service is available for an extra charge.

Extend the session

If you'd like to extend the session on the day, I can do this at a rate of 80% of the agreed hourly rate.

My experience and credentials

I am recognised as one of Manchester's leading online photographers. I have one of the largest and most high profile online photo collections of any locally-based photographer, spread across three large websites. My groundbreaking Manchester Mega-Photo has been on display at Manchester's Urbis museum since July 2008. I co-authored the M60 book, containing over 70 of my photos. I wrote the Q&A pages for the first 27 issues (2002-2005) of Digital Camera magazine. I have an A Level in photography, and am a very experienced user of Photoshop. I have successfully turned a hobby into a successful online venture, but it hasn't been easy! If you'd like to take your photography career further, you can benefit from my wealth of experience! I make no promises, but I'll do my best to help you.

Tuition rates and how to take things further

I don't have fixed fees - the fee is negotiated based on budget, tuition format and other factors.

Lessons can be for one or two hour sessions weekly, one-off half day or full day sessions, or some other arrangement. The pricing is usually between 20 and 30 pounds an hour. Discounts are available for block bookings paid for in advance.
