Around the M60, Manchester's orbital motorway is an illustrated softback coffee table book co-authored by Peter Portland, Matthew Hyde and Aidan O'Rourke.
This large format full colour paperback book explores the theme of the M60 motorway and its effect on the development of the Manchester area. There are thought-provoking essays on a selection of locations around the motorway, including Stockport railway viaduct, the Trafford Centre, the Bridgewater Canal, Worsley, the mills of Oldham and many more.
The book features of my 70 photos, as well as some fascinating archive images including aerial shots of the Manchester Ship Canal, the construction of the Barton high level bridge in 1957, the path of the motorway through Stockport in 1983 and 1958, Agatha Christie at Abney Hall around 1912, Agecroft Hall and the power station that replaced it,
On the right is a selection of my M60 photos, some of which appear in the book.
The M60 book is a great read - I can say that because most of it was written by my colleagues Peter Portland and Matthew Hyde. My introductory chapter and description of the M60 at Stockport is semi-autobiographical. I also did the chapter on Daisy Nook and wrote it in the style already established by the other two authors.
Motorway enthusiasts will appreciate the final section giving key facts on the construction of the various motorways which in late 2000 were joined up to become the M60.
The M60 book was launched in October 2004.
Price is 25 pounds, plus p&p £2 UK £3 Europe £5 rest of world.
