Review Focus on Imaging 2007 Page 5 | Aperture program by Apple Computer

On the Apple stand I saw a presentation on the subject of Aperture, Apple's photo management and enhancement program. Last year I tried out the first version of Aperture and was extremely disappointed with it.

The latest version of Aperture certainly looks impressive on screen, but it's still difficult to assess whether the program has addressed the serious problems in the initial version. For that you have to try it out.

That was no problem on the Apple stand with plenty of dual core G5s each with 2 30 inch displays connected.

One of Apple's young and enthusiastic assistants gave me a quick but thorough run down of the improvements made since the initial version of Aperture. Many of the initial problems have been addressed. For instance now files are no longer imported into the program, but left in their existing location.

The success of any program is whether it enables you to do what you want to do with it, and on this score, unfortunately, Aperture still lets me down. A basic requirement for me is to be able to create multiple versions of the same image at different sizes, thumbnail, mediaum screen, desktop wallpaper, medium print resolution, high print resolution. Unfortunately Aperture can only export one image at at time.

I had a quick 'go' on the program but I decided to move on as time was short and I can call into an Apple store at any time to try out their latest products.

And just as I was ready to move on to another interesting product, the announcement echoed through the hall that Focus On Imaging was now closed for the day.

I'd intended to visit my friends at Redeye, the North West Photography Network, present at Focus On Imaging for the first time, as well as the highly successful ePhotozine, who had an expanded presence this year, offering many workshops and presentations.

But there was no time, that's why it's always best to get to Focus On Imaging as early as you can.
