I teach German one to one to all kinds of people and age ranges. Here are some examples:
A 15 year old high school student taking German the coming summer. She is having difficulty in class and lacks confidence.
A 30 year old business entrepreneur who is keen to learn German as he deals with clients in Germany on a daily basis and needs a working knowledge of German.
A 16 year old grammar school student who is doing quite well at German A Level but needs to achieve the highest possible grade.
An adult student who took German at school but would like to refresh his knowledge, for pleasure and holidays.
The content of the lesson is geared towards the student's goals and personal preferences. The work might focus on what the student has been doing in class. I can provide support with homework tasks or highlight an area of grammar that has been causing difficulty.
Alternatively I can provide an independent tuition on any topic area or grammar point.
An adult student can use a self-study course such as Take Off in German. The work will consist of additional practice based on the content of the book and CD. I can also provide copies of worksheets from my Language Dossiers collection.
Lesson diary
Every lesson I make notes on my MacBook Pro laptop computer and it's also possible to record material on my professional quality MP3 player. At the end of the lesson we transfer the text files and audio to your computer. You can use these for revision.
My qualifications and experience
I have an honours degree in Modern Languages from Trinity College Dublin (BA 1981, MA conferred in 2002) and I hold the Post Graduate Certificate in Education to teach Modern Languages and English (Avery Hill College, now part of Greenwich University, 1983). I have been teaching German since 1983. I worked at South Trafford College of Further Education from 1983 to 1991 as a lecturer in German, taking beginner, GCSE and A Level day and evening classes. I taught English as a Foreign Language in the Middle East from 1991 to 1996 and developed my freelance career in photography and website publishing from 1996 to 2009 when I started to teach German again.
My level of knowledge
My spoken German is of a very high standard - not quite native speaker standard, but good enough that when I talk German to people in Germany, they assume that I have lived there for many years. My pronunication is so good that they are usually not able to tell which country I am from!
A passion for German language, culture and history
My prime motivation is my passion for German language and my affinity for Germany and the German-speaking world. After more than four decades, I continue to be fascinated with the language and gain huge personal satisfaction from being able to understand it, use it and teach it. I am dedicated to helping every student achieve their potential in the language.
