I photographed this 1970s Toyota Land Cruiser on my first visit to Al-Ain in April 1992.

In comparison to more recent Land Cruisers with their rounded lines and gleaming chrome, this earlier Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 looks prehistoric. In the early days of the UAE, the British Land Rover was a common sight, but gradually the Japanese Land Cruiser took over as one of the most sought after 4WD vehicles. The Arabic writing on the door tells us this one is owned by a government ministry.
