This section of the former GDR border at Hötensleben has been preserved for future generations.

It's possible to visit the remains of the GDR border on a remarkable guided tour from the town of Helmstedt. Read my article or go to www.grenzdenkmaeler.de.

On most of the border facing West Germany a fence was used on the outer section. At Hötensleben a section of wall was used, similar to the Berlin Wall. The reason for this was the close proximity of the village of Hötensleben to the border. Beyond the wall was a further section of GDR territory before the actual border with West Germany. The border was a strict no-go area for all but GDR border guards and dogs. Many birds and animals existed within the border strip, which was mostly devoid of people. The border came to an end in 1990 with German reunification.
