A large cross is formed by trees planted on the hillside above the village of Abergwyngregyn, on the A55 near Bangor in North Wales. The cross is marked on the map, see Multimap.

This is one of the many interesting sights along the A55, the remarkable dual carriageway linking Holyhead and Chester.

There is a belief that the cross was planted in memory of people killed in an air disaster, but H L Richards sent me this:

"The trees, forming a cross, were an experiment by (Bangor) university to find a suitable way of sheltering live stock on the mountain side and has nothing to do with an aircraft crash. The cross appears on the Ordnance Survey map published in 1962 but not on the one published in 1953, which suggests the planting was done at some time between these dates. The 1962 map also shows trees in a Y shape a little distance above the cross and above the Y there is a another uniform arrangement of trees forming a line."
