Manchester Town Hall is the home of local government authority the City of Manchester. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and opened in 1874. Palatial in scale it is neo-Gothic recalling medieval Flemish town halls. A magnificent building more opulent than the parliament buildings of many countries. No longer the city's tallest structure, the clocktower is still visible for miles around, though though its sphere of influence is limited: Five minutes walk from here, at the River Irwell, the City of Manchester ends and the City of Salford begins.
