Manchester town hall is one of the most familiar and most magnificent landmarks of Manchester. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and opened in the 1870s. The building is astounding both inside and out, with its intricate stonework, municipal symbols and statues. The clock tower was until the 1960s the tallest structure in Manchester, and it can still be seen for miles around. It is the home of Manchester City Council. In this image, the afternoon sun lights up the stonework, also illuminating the red post box on the corner of Albert Square. Red post boxes are an essential feature of the UK's national identity and look very photogenic in historic settings such as this.
