The south facade of Speke Hall looks out over the lawn darkened by the shadows of the trees on this late October day. The medieval half-timbered house is a National Trust property. It is situated next to Liverpool Airport. On the local TV magazine programme in the 1960's I remember a song written and performed by schoolchildren with the words: "And the planes do roar all over the grounds of old Speke Hall..."
