Picture: Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary moved 841.1 metres » Filename: CzMostCch5X31.jpg

The Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary is the main tourist attraction in Most Czech Republic. It dates from around the beginning of the 1600s and was designed by Jakob Heilmann of Schweinfurt. In the 60s and 70s the old town of Most was obliterated to make way for open cast mining, but due to its historical significance, the church was moved 841.1m to a new location. Most is surrounded by steep hills like the one in the background.

Surreal Camper trip from Dresden to Most
It was the fourth day of our Dresden stay, the first day after the clocks went back, a day on which we would turn our backs on sunny Dresden and head over the border into a gloomy Czech Republic.

Photos in the nearby visitors centre document how in 1975 the ancient stone church was lifted onto a huge platform and moved slowly to its new location away from the open cast mine. The full name of this church in Czech is: Dekanský kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie v Moste (apologies for missing accent on the e) and in German Die Dekanalkirche Maria Himmelfahrt in Brüx. The German Dekanalkirche means 'church with a dean'
