These were some of the first apartment blocks to be constructed by the GDR regime in the early fifties. They were proclaimed as 'palaces of the people' though soon the state could only afford to construct plain concrete boxes a shortage of resources. If we put aside memories of the Stalinist era which these buildings arouse, they are very impressive and form an important part of Berlin's architectural legacy.
