In the late 1960s steam trains were withdrawn and many lines were closed, including the Midland route that passed through Chorlton and Didsbury. And yet the memory lives on in this superb photograph taken in 1951 by Tom Lewis. It's from the Eddie Johnson collection of railway images. Read Eddie's commentary below. The line through Didsbury may yet be re-used as part of the Metrolink system.

No.45629 at Didsbury, Manchester. November 10th 1951: No small boy could ever resist the sight and sound of a steam engine working hard and the young character in our picture is clearly no exception. Generations of youngsters were enthralled by sights such as the one here: former LMS “Jubilee” class No.45629 Straits Settlements begins the climb southwards towards the outskirts of Stockport and on south through the Peak District via Chinley towards Derby. The time of our train is not recorded, but back in those days London-bound trains left Manchester’s Central station at 25 minutes past the hour for arrival in London St.Pancras around four hours later.
