You can almost smell the smoke from the factories and steam engines in Trevor Grimshaw's superbly rendered sketches of a northern industrial landscape which today has mostly been sanitised. Carefully balancing compositional elements, he creates beauty and harmony out of the darkest subject matter. This view of the north of England I remember from my childhood is idealised, truthful and visually compelling.
