Harcourt Street Station was opened in 1859 (stone inscription 'MDCCCLIX') and was the terminus of the Dublin and Wicklow Railway. The line ran through south Dublin and eventually joined the coastal line north of Bray. The station and line were closed by Córas Iompair Éireann, the state-owned national transport company, in 1958. I remember my father Bartholomew 'Bertie' O'Rourke talking about travelling on the Harcourt Street line in the 1930s to 1950s. Today the Luas tram line runs past the station and joins the path of the original railway line next to the Grand Canal. The magnificent station building currently houses the Odeon Bar and Grill www.odeon.ie.
