Manchester Chorlton Park Apartments designed by Stephenson Bell

Chorlton Park Apartments on Barlow Moor Road have added a new contemporary style element to the mostly Victorian Manchester suburb of Chorlton. Balconies supported on a framework of bare wood look out across Barlow Moor Road over Chorlton Park. Designed by Stephenson Bell architects for Urban Splash and Irwell Valley Housing Association, the development was completed in 2002. More info at www.cabe.org.uk

This location is featured in the Eyewitness in Manchester Chorlton Feature, online by the 29th of May 2004.

The spartan contemporary styling is like nothing ever seen before in the older residential parts of Manchester. I like the use of wood, though an architect critic remarked that it was dishonest because load-bearing metal pillars and girders are concealed underneath.
