High Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter is at the centre of an important redevelopment scheme. The old Smithfields Markets area is being turned into a residential district with contemporary style flats and apartments. The intention is to create a village in the city. Many original features have been retained, including flagstones, setts or cobblestone on the street, the exterior walls of the markets (left) and these old lamp posts. The French-style street signs are a recent addition.

I don't remember seeing the lamp posts before, but they look old-fashioned and I like them. The Northern Quarter is one of my favourite parts of Manchester and it's improving all the time.
