Looking up at the John Rylands Library on Deansgate Manchester with a clear blue sky above. The lower part of the facade is obscured by shadows of buildings on the other side of the street. The John Rylands Library is one of Manchester's most magnificent buildings. With its Gothic architecture it resembles a cathedral, but in other respects is is a symbol of modernity: It was one of the first buildings in Manchester to have electric lighting. As part of the redevelopment of the Spinningfields district, it was renovated and a new extension and new main entrance were added at the rear. The John Rylands Library, part of Manchester University, is a 'cathedral to learning' in the heart of Manchester.
