Manchester's Odeon is one of the UK's few surviving art deco style super-cinemas from the 1930's. Here it is the night of Friday 23 November 2001. Oxford St is busy with evening traffic.

After 74 years in continuous use, the Odeon Cinema closed on 2 September 2004 and may soon be demolished.

It survived the 1940 Blitz, the onset of television in the 50s, the decline of cinemas in the 60s and 70s, the economic stagnation of the 80s and the IRA bomb attacks of the 90s, but it couldn't survive the post-2000 planning policies of Manchester City Council, which allowed too many new cinema screens to be opened. The building also offended against the Disability Discrimination Act, which came into force on 1 October 2004.
