View of Piccadilly Plaza Manchester from the top of Market Street. This image was captured on 16 June 1998. On the right is the former Eagle Star House, demolished around 2002. In the centre, Sunley Tower, renamed City Tower, to its left, the Hotel Piccadilly (Jarvis Hotels). The Metrolink tram lines curve round from Market Street towards the tram stop behind the trees centre left. This image was taken before the redevelopment of Piccadilly around 2000, and before the demolition of the former Eagle Star house on the right. This building with its distinctive, Chinese style roof, was a significant example of modern architecture in Manchester. At the time this photo was taken, it was in need of repair. Scaffolding can be seen supporting the roof. Sadly the previous owners demolished it and replaced it with a far less interesting building. Despite the worthy attempts of present owners Bruntwood www.bruntwood.co.uk to revitalise Piccadilly Plaza, it is now permanently compromised due to the loss of Eagle Star House. Piccadilly Plaza is one of Manchester's most impressive and most flawed pieces of post war architecture, and unlike many, I like it very much.
