Metrolink tram at St Peters Square tram stop in the centre of Manchester during late January snowstorms in 2004.

Opened by the Queen in 1992, Metrolink was one of the first revived tram systems in the UK and is enormously successful. In 2004 the Labour government refused to approve extra funding to allow planned expansion to go ahead.
