Looking up at the podium of the Manchester University Mathematics Building, under demolition in October 2005. By December, this structure had become just a memory, the site almost ready for construction of a gigantic new university building, stretching from Oxford Rd to Upper Brook Street. Keep visiting this site to see it emerge.

The Maths Building had to go because it couldn't handle the vast student numbers in the new combined Manchester mega-University. But it was still a shocking sight to pass by on the 42 bus and see one of Manchester's more interesting pieces of modern architecture, and a major landmark in the city, being systematically destroyed. I imagined a cartoon in which the Chancellor returns after a 6 month sabbatical, and says 'Hey, I didn't say you were to demolish the Maths Dept building, just the Maths Dept bikesheds!'
