The Maths and Social Science Building of the former UMIST, now part of Manchester University, seen from the east next to the Mancunian Way (left). In the foreground is a section of roadway with setts. What makes Manchester so fascinating is its remarkable mix of old and new, the shock of new buildings juxtaposed with remains of its industrial past. The area to the south of the city centre is a good example. The MSS building was built in 1968 on the site of 19th century slum housing. The setts - used for roadbuilding since Roman times - are juxtaposed with the Mancunian Way flyover, the section on the left built 1994.
