The coat of arms of the Duke of
Bridgewater is inset into the motorway bridge at Worsley. I took this photo after taking
a close-up of the coat of arms for inclusion in the M60 book.
The ancient sandstone-carved coat of arms looks incongruous when set into the motorway bridge. Since the motorway was built in the early 60's, traffic noise has disturbed the calm of this historic village. Perhaps the Duke of Bridgewater would be glad that the modern-day equivalent of his canal now passes through Worsley.
