First glimpse of the flag of North West England, as proposed by Tony Wilson's Necessary Group, campaigning for a 'Yes' vote in the referendum on elected regional government. The design, based on the top left hand corner of the existing flag of England is by Peter Saville. Go to the Necessary Group website, launched 20 Feb 2004.

Commissioned by Tony Wilson of the Necessary Group. This photograph is historic as it was the first hoisting of the North West England flag, and the first time a photo of the flag has appeared online. Photo taken 12. 38, and supplied later in the day. Background sky and landscape is from my archive. Flagpole taken from my photo of the Irish tricolour.
