Jodrell Bank Mark 1, later Lovell telescope is owned and run by Manchester University and was opened in 1957. It is named the Lovell telescope, after its founder Sir Bernard Lovell, born 1913. The telescope can be seen rising above the Cheshire plain from many miles away. Here the sun has just sipped below the horizon, and the telescope is pointing up into the dusk sky.
Jodrell Bank radio telescope doesn't just do an important job of research, it's also an inspiration to young astronomers and scientists.
