An evening with...Buzzcocks' Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley, featuring Richard Boon was held at Urbis, Manchester's centre for urban culture, on 12 August 2005. Re-united in front of an audience for the first time in many years were Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, co-founders of the Buzzcocks, together with their manager Richard Boon. They talked about the early years of the band, finishing at the point when Devoto left in 1977. Leading the discussion was singer and journalist John Robb. The discussion was fresh, frank and often humorous, supplemented by archive music, photos and film. I found out many things I hadn't realised, and enjoyed hearing familiar tracks again. This wasn't nostalgia, but a process of piecing together the story of often forgotten events and people who helped to change the course of pop and lay the foundations of Manchester's musical success in the 80s and 90s. Unlikely rock icon Pete Shelley still has homely affability of your next door neighbour in Leigh, though for many years he has lived in London. Fellow London resident Howard Devoto, now not so lean and much more relaxed in himself, is sharp, eloquent and a bit scary in thick glasses, like a media studies lecturer who'd have no hesitation in giving you a bad grade.
