Pete Shelley achieved critical acclaim in the late 70's with Buzzcocks, the band he co-founded with Howard Devoto. Dubbed 'romantic poet of the late 70's, his self-penned hits include 'What Do I Get?', 'Love You More', 'Ever Fallen in Love' covered by Fine Young Cannibals and another version was used in the movie Shrek 2. Pete Shelley's songs are catchy, simple and honest, recapturing the spirit of 60's British pop, but taking it a notch higher in speed and energy. In 1976, Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto brought the Sex Pistols to Manchester, an event which inspired a new generation of Manchester musicians and changed the course of pop music. Pete Shelley is the antithesis of the 70's mega-rockstar. In archive interviews with Tony Wilson, Pete Shelley seems to have the charisma of a walk-on character in an early 60's kitchen sink movie, with his homely Leigh accent, sideburns and camp affability. In 1978 at the Russell Club I did an interview with Pete Shelley and submitted it to the Irish music magazine Hot Press but editor Niall Stokes didn't publish it. The piece was probably more suited to a fanzine. Sadly I don't have it now.
