The roller coaster story of Factory records and the Hacienda is brought to life in this film directed by Michael Winterbottom. At the centre of the things is local tv presenter and pop impresario Tony Wilson played by Steve Coogan. Events are recreated in spirit, not as they actually happened, with embellishments such as flashes forward in time and fantasy sequences. From tentative beginnings, legendary bands like New Order and a legendary night club were spawned, but problems with finances and drugs led to a sad disintegration.

It's described as comic, but I felt great sadness at how a dream come true turned into a nightmare. Steve Coogan skilfully recreates the Wilson phenomenon, complete with endless literary quotes, rambling conversations and copious swear words, but also his idealism, energy and genius. A special commendation should go to Sean Harris who played Joy Division's Ian Curtis. This is the story of my city, of people I have met, of events I remember - though I was only on the periphery of it all. It's a brilliant film, but prepare to be shocked and surprised.
