Looking from the Wellington Rd South bridge over the River Mersey towards the Stockport Railway Viaduct. A train is crossing the viaduct and will shortly stop at Edgeley Station.

"Stockport Viaducts. Opened in 1839. They are almost one third of a mile in length and consist of 23 semi-circular arches nearly all of which have 63 feet spans. The height from the bed of the River to the battlement is 111 feet. It is computed that the average number of trains passing over the viaducts in 24 hours is over 500."

Text taken from the reverse of the post card which was printed in Leipzig Germany. This is a black and white photograph that has been hand tinted, giving it a delicate, painterly quality.
