The church of St Martin is in Ashton-upon-Mersey is seen here from just outside the gate on Church Lane. It has a distinctive tower of unusual design. The church and surroundings have a rural atmosphere and yet it is only around 4 miles to the centre of Manchester. Ashton-on-Mersey is in historic Cheshire just south of the River Mersey, since 1974 part of the Borough of Trafford.
