On a once empty area of sand, the vast Madina Jumeirah Hotel has arisen just to the south of the Burj Al Arab Hotel. Madina Jumeirah recreates on a grand scale Dubai's traditional architecture, with its sandy-coloured randomly arranged wind towers, most of which were lost during the oil boom.

I visited the Madina Jumeirah hotel and was astounded how a vast hotel, in effect a town (Arabic 'madinah') has appeared out of nothing in just a few years. This type of thing is in progress all over Dubai and sets the benchmark for large-scale new urban development anywhere in the world. The question is: How is it all going to turn out in the end?
