Dubai Marina is built around a man-made lagoon similar in scale to the natural lagoon on which Dubai is located some 5 miles (8km) to the north. Up till a few years ago, this was an empty area of sand next to the highway.

Traditionally a marina is a harbour with some boats in it. This being Dubai, Dubai Marina is a high-rise supercity built around a huge man-made lagoon. The scale and impact of this new city have to be seen to be believed.
