Pendle Hill looms above the fields of Lancashire. We are looking from the west, not far from Clitheroe. Pendle has a mysterious and forbidding air. Like many hills it must have been held as sacred in pre-Christian times. It is renowned for its connections with witches. As if to counteract the pagan influence, Pendle Hill is the name of a Quaker study centre in Pennsylvania. |
