Northcliffe House on Deansgate was the northern
offices of the Daily Mail until the 1980s. It was built in 1931 in
American-style art deco though I haven't been able to find out who the
architect was. The striking tower reminded me of a rocket as a
child, and stood as a reminder of Manchester's former pre-eminence in
newspaper production. Today, a striking new building stands on
the site, occupied by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Which building is
more striking?
