The Capitol Cinema occupies a special place in
the media history of Manchester. Built in 1931, it served as a
cinema until 1956, when it became the northern studios of the
independent TV company ABC. The talent show Opportunity Knocks
presented by Hughie Green was broadcast from here. It subsequently
passed to Manchester Polytechnic and was used by students on drama and
related courses. Many famous actors and actresses trained here
including Julie Walters. I went to see Coronation St actress Sue
Cleaver in a student production here. In 1999 the Capitol was torn down
to make way for a residential development named Capitol Court. (Thanks
to Geoff Stafford for some of the info here)
