In 1999 the entrance to Crumpsall park had older style gates with ornate metalwork. Like the park signs it was painted in fiery red, perhaps to remind ratepayers of the political colour of Manchester City Council.  The infamous obelisk was resited from Market Street a couple of years earlier. By 2005 newer style safety gates of plain design have appeared. These are a standard feature where a gate leads onto a main road and are intended to prevent people - especially children - running or cycling out onto the road. Above the gate in gold painted metal letters is the name 'Crumpsall Park'. Though the gates are now painted green, the City of Manchester is still ruled by Labour.
