STOCKPORT RAILWAY VIADUCT has been one of the town's major landmarks since it was first built in the early 1840's. It carries the main Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston railway line across Stockport town centre, and the valley of the River Mersey.

Here we are standing at the top of the flight of stairs which leads from Wellington Road South down to bus station below. The river is just visible on the right of the picture next to the trees.

STOCKPORT RAILWAY VIADUCT dominates the town centre reminding us of the importance of rail transport in the development of the town. In the 1970's a new bus station was constructed on former industrial land on the other side of Wellington Road from Mersey Square, which used to serve as the main bus station.

A Stagecoach 371 is just setting off for Altrincham and high above the town, a plane is on its final approach to Manchester Airport.

EWM says: I've taken the 371 many times travelling to Altrincham. I remember when this was the 71, operated by North Western using 1950's style buses.

THE WHITE LION is a grandiose Victorian style pub with half-timbered gables and a white corner tower. It is located on Great Underbank close to the Merseyway Shopping centre.

THE THREE SHIRES PUB is a genuine medieval half-timbered building situated on Great Underbank.

The plaque says: 'Built c.1580 Cheshire half-timbered town house formerly belonging to the Leghs of Adlington Hall. Shopfront inserted in 1824. At various times has housed a confectioners, bakehouse, surgery, solicitors, restaurant and wine bar.' The plaque was put up by the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.

BRAMALL HALL, Bramhall, Stockport is one of the biggest and most magnificent half timbered houses in the country.

The former family home is now owned and maintained by Stockport Metropolitan Borough.
