Default The Other Fleet Street

Having recently bought the excellent book, The Other Fleet Street (Robert Waterhouse, 2004) about the history of the newspaper industry in Manchester, I would be most interested to hear from any one out there who could provide insight into this industry and the fascinating history it has had in Manchester.

I spent 12 years working on the production side of newspapers. It's several years since I read that book, but I seem to remember that it was mainly from a journalistic angle.

As a casual worker I was "On the Town" for a relatively short period of seven months which involved working in the machine rooms, publishing rooms, readers, messengers etc of most of the Manchester National papers, and also the odd day or week in General Print places such as the Co Op Press and Bowaters.

Hi Gerad, thanks for the reply.

Id be fascinated to hear any anecdotes or accounts on people's experience of working in this industry whether on the journalistic or production side of things. It would be a shame for an industry that's played such a significant role in Manchester's cultural and economic life to be overlooked.

I apologise for not replying earlier, I have only just seen your reply. When I get the time I will certainly pass on a few stories. I get in touch with a friend of mine who spent many more years on the papers than I did and let him know about this.
