Smile Underground Stockport

Hi I'm new to these forums. I live in Stockport in Greater Manchester and recently some of my friends stumbled upon a hole into the air raid shelters underneath stockport. Now if you're familiar with the shelters you already know that they span miles upon miles underneath stockport and the surrounding area. The section we discovered was near Brinksway. After some investigation on the interweb I found a map of the site, it appears the site has already been explored officially by the DCC but me and a couple of mates are going to explore down there once we get some gear together; candles, torches, battery food and water etc. but I was just wondering if anybody had any interesting information about this site. When we were exploring it last night we found some toilets but lacking the equipment we hesitantly turned back round and exited the site.

We're going back down in a couple of days when the weather clears up, I'll post some pictures and videos.

Default Wow, amazing the Stockport tunnels extend as far as Brinksway

Wow, this is amazing, I didn't realise the tunnels extend as far as Brinksway. But of course, I've seen the door in the side of the rock above the River Mersey, just below Brinksway.

Rather you than me, I have a fear of tunnels and underground spaces!

Yes the door above Brinksway has always been quite ominous to me, I remember driving past in my dads van and asking him what it was as a child. He told me about the many times he and other local Edgeley kids used to explore "maggies caves" as they called it. There's a legend behind the caves that a witch called Maggie used to reside in there, hence the name. Needless to say that many children were too afraid to venture into the tunnels after hearing that!
Also yes, the tunnels are quite extensive. There are different sites all over the town where people have unearthed openings but unfortunately many have been sealed. The entrance at the site we found was a hole dug about 2 feet into the ground and someone had used some kind of pneumatic drill to bore through the concrete into the network below. It truly is fascinating stuff. I can't wait until this crappy weather disappears so we can venture back down and get some photos and videos.

Welcome to the forum FreedomRunner.

You probably know my daughter - she came home last night full of this discovery. Did you cover up the entrance? I've dropped you a PM, and I'd love to assist you with this exploration. Needs to be done pretty swiftly though before the council get wind of the opening.

just googled and found this:

ThenewMendoza: Stockport Air Raid Shelters - Dodge Hill&Brinksway - 02/02/08

dunno if its related. (not too sure where brinksway is)

Also in Stockport, if you come down through Heaton Norris past where the wreck(bonfire) is held and turn and go to the walkway which goes over the M60. Just at the start of the walkway if you jump over the side into the trees etc there is a big red metal door in the side of the hill. Anyone know what that is all about? I saw this about 7-8 years ago with my friends and it looked like people had dug away underneath the door and it was possible to squeeze under the door.

also found this:

stockport air raid shelters REPORT-05/07/07 ARCHIVED - UK Urban Exploration Forums

looks like the pics are no dead :{ but he had an adventure

Brinksway is not connected to the other air raid shelters (Dodge Hill and Chestergate)

It has original beds and toilets, though there has been some damage to them over the years.
Dodge Hill is in better condition.

The entrance is well known and has been open for years.
It's a tight squeeze

Hi guys,

I'm one of a number of urbexers based in the North West (and a friend of Mendoza, who's site has been quoted!). We've explored these tunnels in great detail, but we're also experienced and responsible.

If you are planning on visiting, may I suggest the following:

Don't make locations and access public. Security and council staff regularly browse forums for stuff like this (one of our members has had some very high profile visits to his sites because of the stuff he's explored). So please modify your posts and keep things to PM.

Not only that but it gives easy access to chavs and undesirables who may want to damage or grafitti the place.

Don't make public any times and dates of your visits. You never know who might be reading.

Don't go alone. There are all kinds of hazards down there which could easily break your leg. If you've not told anyone where you're going you could be in for a long wait before someone comes looking for you.

Take plenty of equipment. At least two torches each. I always take a clockwork one as a backup to my big Maglite.

Beware of stale air. It can be very easy to be quickly overcome.

Default Re Underground visits

The number of visits to this and other underground threads has shown that a good number of people are intrigued by hidden facilities and underground workings.

The post by Gibbo leaves the forum moderators with some difficulties.

Whilst not encouraging trespass or otherwise illegal visits it does give guidance on certain points to bear in mind when working underground and has more than an inference of how to avoid detection should illegal visits be planned.

To make things absolutely clear, this Forum does not condone or encourage trespass or illegal visits. Any details posted regarding how to access sites illegally will be deleted and the member will be permanently banned.

Information from visits that have been made and discussion of what has been found will be allowed but any details we deem should not be published will be edited out.

This Forum will not be held responsible for any action taken against any individual and will co-operate with the authorities if asked to identify those posting information, use of which would encourage trespass or which has been gained through trespass, which the authorities or property owners deem actionable.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Default No condoning or encouragement of trespass

Thanks Phil for this notice, which I absolutely support. This Forum is hosted on my aidan.co.uk site and I need to ensure that there is nothing on the site which I would not approve of myself.

I do not approve of illegally gaining access to property, for any reason, exploration, protest or otherwise.

I encourage courteous exchange of views, information and opinion on all aspects of the development of Manchester and other topics, even if the views are strong, and contradictory to mine.

There are plenty of other sites where information of the type Phil is referring to can be shared. We will not allow any direct links to them, but they can be found easily enough.

All it would take would be for some 'bad' material to come to the attention of someone or other, and the entire forum and site could be put in jeopardy.

Please understand this and abide by the guidelines.

Thanks,

Aidan
