l have just seen your site on Levenshulme, and it has brought back many happy memories for me. l came from Liverpool when l was 5 years old to live in Levenshulme my Father got a job @ Fairey Aviation, we moved into a house on Stockport Rd, near Clare Rd, l went to St. Mary's R.C. School at the bottom of Clare Rd, behind the School was St. Mary's Church and the Convent of St Clare's Poor Colleteens, the nuns wore a brown habit, the Priest lived in a house facing Woodland Ave.
l remember the skating rink (roller) my Brother was always there and used to take me along with him, l was still going there in my early twenties, l met my husband there, we married at St. Peter's Church in 1952. l used to work for Handley's plumbers and ironmongers near the skating rink, next door was Simpson's wool shop, l worked there for 9 yrs.(Handley's) After our marriage we rented a house in Randolph Street ( my maiden name was Mary Duffy) and my married name is Lund, David came from Longsight.
Does anyone remember Kelly's butchers, during the war he sold only horse meat for human consumption, and then there was Meeson's sweet shop, both facing Alma Rd. My Mother ran a boarding house on Stockport Rd, for many, many years, mostly young Irishmen stayed with her, some married girls from Levenshulme.
As l have said l have really enjoyed what you have written and look forward to reading more of your articles inthe future.
Many thanks Aidan.
