Question The Black Friar Pub.

Please can anyone enlighten me as to the history of the old (closed ) Black Friar pub at the traffic lights on Trinity Way/Blackfriars Road. It would appear, by the writing on the wall, to have been a school at one time and I would be very interested if anyone has any information or can steer me in the right direction to find it myself.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Default Black Friar pub

The Black Friar pub is on King Street and many years ago there were several private schools along there. At that time, the pub was called the Old School Inn. When Blackfriars Road was built, it bisected King Street alongside the pub. The name was then changed to the Blackfriars. Later, following building work on the pub, the name was changed to the Black Friar.
Sorry I don't have any dates to go with this info.

Thanks for that, any idea what the motto says (along frame of middle window) always driving past, but cannot make out the bit that is obscured by paint.

Have now stopped to look and it would appear that it is not paint - it is lichen and it's totally obscuring the middle words. What I can read is ......"YOU MAY GO FURTHER ???????????????? WORSE". I wonder if that relates to the school or to the pub? This is really intruiging me. I've got to get to the bottom of it somehow!!

There is a date of 1887 on the left side (facing) as to when it was rebuilt.

I've never noticed the motto - mind you I don't go that way very often, but next time I do I'll have a look!

Default Black Friar motto

It sounds like your motto is 'You may go farther and fare worse' - an old saying!
