This image features in the book Liverpool Then and Now, alongside an archive photo. Oriel Chambers is Grade 1 listed building. Its large windows and simple design are a foretaste of twentieth century modernist buildings. Oriel Chambers was built in 1864, architect Peter Ellis. It was one of the first buildings to have a steel frame.
To me, Oriel Chambers is very elegant and pleasing to the eye, but when it was built, reaction was very negative. It seems difficult to imagine. Oriel Chambers is a Grade 1 Listed building. I love the old photo with a car parked where the taxi is in my photo, taken summer 2012. To appreciate this and all the other old and modern photos you will have to buy a copy of the book Liverpool Then and Now! On sale in good bookshops.
