Interior courtyard of a 19th century Berlin tenement block looking up towards the sky. This pen and ink illustration is taken from a black and white postcard photograph, one of a series published in Berlin during the late 1970's.
In the west Berlin district of Kreuzberg there are many tenement blocks with rear courtyards like this one. Here, the courtyard is triangular as the building is constructed at the junction of two streets. The picture captures how residents must have felt hemmed in on all sides and longed to escape to somewhere brighter and airier. I lived in a flat overlooking a courtyard like one from 1979-1980.
