The Brandenburg Gate seen in December 1982 from the western side about half a kilometre along Strasse des 17. Juni, which for security reasons is blocked to traffic at this point. The Gate stands just inside the boundary of East Berlin and is a symbol of the Cold War division of Berlin and Europe. Signs point to the West Berlin suburbs of Wedding to the north, with Kreuzberg and Schöneberg to the south. Seven years later in November 1989, people stood on the wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate to celebrate the end of Communism - an unimaginable thought for most people until it finally happened.
