Councillor Richard Leese has
been the Leader of Manchester City Council since 1996. He is a Labour Party councillor
for the north Manchester ward Crumpsall where he also lives. He is originally from
Mansfield, and is a former maths teacher. On 23 of June 2004 I witnessed him being re-
elected for a further term in Manchester Town Hall council chamber.
This photograph was taken for my Eyewitness in Manchester People feature. If you type 'Richard Leese' into Google, my page on Richard Leese comes up number one. If you type 'Leader of Manchester City Council', it appears in the number three position.
Councillor Richard Leese has the most high profile job in one of the most important local councils in the UK. He has appeared in local media countless times, and yet if he were to walk down Market St in the city centre, few people would recognise him. Such is the lack of interest in local politics in the UK.
