Manchester Hacienda building Whitworth St facade

The former yacht warehouse which housed the legendary Hacienda night club from the early 1980's to 1997 stood on Whitworth Street West. This is the view from under the railway viaduct on the south side of the street. The building was demolished in 2002 to make way for the 'Hacienda' apartment building.

What we see here is far more elegant and idiosyncratic than what replaced it. The coloured tiles were added after the Hacienda closed in 1997. Ironically it was the legendary status of the Hacienda which led to the destruction of the building which housed it. Commercial pressures to capitalise on the famous site as well as a wish not to retain the building as a museum piece, led to its ultimate demise.
